When a dog is born without hearing, it is known as congenital deafness. Certain breeds are more likely to be born deaf, such as:

• Dalmatians (with up to a 30% chance of being born deaf)

• Bull Terriers
• Catahoula Leopards
• Parson Russells
• Whippets

These breeds may have a higher chance of congenital deafness, but the condition is not caused by an injury or illness—it’s something they are born with. Research suggests that the lack of pigment cells in white dogs contributes to hearing impairment.
